Thunderbird has its own adaptive junk email filter, adaptive in a sense that it learns more which is spam and which is not as you use it longer. It also allows your antivirus software to scan the incoming and outgoing email before displaying them to you.
I've been using it for a few years now, and have never got my computer infected by email-borne virus.

Try this:

Click File > New > Account

Choose Email Account, click Next

Enter your name and your yahoo.co.uk email address, click Next

Choose POP, enter "pop.mail.yahoo.com", uncheck "Use Global Inbox", click Next

Enter your incoming username and your outgoing user name. These will be your Yahoo! ID, that is, your email address without the "@yahoo.co.uk", click Next

Leave or change the Account name. It can be anything. Click Next.

Uncheck "Download Messages Now", click Finish

Click Tools > Account Settings

Select (on the left hand panel) the account you have just created. It will be displayed as the Account name that you have just entered in step 6.

Right underneath the account name, click "Server Settings".

Make sure these settings are entered:

Server settings: Tick all except "Fetch Headers Only". Also, untick "For at most # days"

Click OK

Click File > Get New Messages For > All Accounts
